The first program written by novice programmers is usually to print out "Hello World" (or something similar). This problem was deemed an appropriate one to use to test GEMS capabilities. While output "Hello World" is a conceptually simple problem, it is sufficiently complex (given the various conditions applicable to GEMS) to demonstrate that GEMS can solve a meaningful problem.
